Biometrics (Fingerprint recognition)

Complete integration with fingerprint identification units (FIU) from Sony © and AuthenTec ©. Fingerprints of employees were scanned on the devices by security department, digitally encrypted and stored in centralized SQL repository for use by several applications. Fingerprint recognition used for automatic sign-on, verification of identity prior to viewing of sensitive information or custody transfer of valuable parcels. Centrally stored fingerprints allowed for integration from various applications from any device by any employee.

Overview of the requirement:

Armoured car company needed restricted access to high security applications. Also needed to log transfer of large sums of cash from one individual to another. Passwords or pins can be shared or stolen. Biometrics was deemed to be a more reliable way of ensuring that the parcel was received by the correct individual. The fingerprints of employees needed to be centrally stored as staff could access the applications from multiple devices.

Description of the solution:

This project was initiated in the late 1990's when biometric technology was really just starting to become popular and affordable. Due to the relatively low cost of implementation compared to other biometrics (i.e. retina scan) fingerprint scanning was chosen as the method of choice. At the time, only a few vendors of fingerprint recognition units (FIU) were in the marketplace and Sony was chosen as it had the best track record for reliability and durability for the devices. A COM wrapper had to be written around the C++ API so it could be used in a VB6 application. In addition, a fast, reliable and secure method for storing the fingerprints and using encrypted binary large objects (BLOBS) in SQL Server was chosen. A reusable class was written and as a result the fingerprint recognition technology was integrated into multiple applications to restrict access and record custody changes of money.
