Triple-DES Data Encryption

Comprised custom method for rapid encrypting, storing, decrypting and streaming text and image data to/from Microsoft SQL Server © using both Bokler TDEScipher © for COM objects and the Microsoft .Net 2.0 Framework. All personnel photographs, employee fingerprints and safe/lock combinations were encrypted for safe storage in the database.

Overview of the requirement:

A customer needed to encrypt sensitive data stored in a Microsoft SQL database. This information was used in multiple applications, most written using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 with applications written later using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. While data encryption was bundled into the Microsoft .Net Framework no such technology existed at that time. As a result, custom .dlls had to be written to encrypt and decrypt data within the applications. The types of data that needed to be encrypted included clear text, images and digitally stored fingerprints.

Description of the solution:

Bokler TDEScipher © for COM objects were purchased to handle the base encryption algorithms. These objects were C++ based so COM wrappers needed to be written so they could be used in Microsoft Visual Basic. Routines were written to encrypt and decrypt text and images quickly. With just a few lines of code any application could encrypt or decrypt data stored in a SQL database making enhanced security extremely easy to implement. Later, as new applications were written using the Microsoft .Net Framework these same .DLLs were used to maintain data consistency.
